Photorealism at the Millennium
Published in Hardcover by Harry N Abrams (October, 2002)
Average review score:

It's a photo, it's a painting, it's Photorealism.
Simply the bestThis book, along with the earlier 'Photorealism' and 'Photorealism since 1980' are quite simply 'the best' in my collection of art books. I never get tired of looking at the masses of incredible images by these great modern artists. Louis Meisel is to be congratulated for allowing the rest of the world to share these great works, many of which would otherwise be hidden to most of us.
Excellent addition to the definitive series on photorealismLouis Meisel et al. have produced yet another beautiful edition to the definitive series on photorealism. Like the two previous volumes ("Photorealism" and "Photorealism Since 1980"), this gorgeous coffeetable book contains page after page of beautiful plates. New work by all the old favorites is here including Estes, Goings, Bell, etc. plus many new artists not featured in the earlier volumes. If you liked either of the two previous volumes, jump on this quick before it's outta print and you gotta mortgage the pig farm to pay for a copy from a used art book dealer. Thoughtfully, this volume is the same dimensions as the previous books in the series so it looks real cool parked next to 'em on the old art book shelf.
Me like!!! 'Nuf said.

American Horticultural Society Pests and Diseases: The Complete Guide to Preventing, Identifying and Treating Plant Problems
Published in Hardcover by DK Publishing (01 February, 2000)
Average review score:

Invaluable resourceWhile this book is not the type most people curl up to read on a cold winter's night, I found it to be a very worthwhile resource for any garden. You can research any problem by either plant or by symptom. Each section is color coded along the page edge for easy use. The pages on Individual Plant Problems are separated into sections like "Garden Trees" or "Bulbs", and then alphabetically listed by common name and the name of the problem. The Gallery of Symptoms allows you to look at general problems with a particular part of the plant, such as leaves, stems, or fruits. Full color photographs accompany each symptom or pest, as well as a listing of types of plants affected and the season of affect. A short description follows with the page number for a full description and the recommended treatment.
GOOD & GROSS!First off, if you can not stand the sight of a bug, this is not for you. I am a horticulture student who loves plants but hates pests! I got this book for a class and it is great! All gardeners shoud have this book close by at all times! It is an indespensible refrence for anyone who wants to have a happy healthy garden. I love the way the book is organized by a "Gallery of Symptoms" in the begining. This is a section of close up pictures of leafs, fruits, nuts, vegetables and flowers with all the pest (disese and bug)problems I ever (never) wanted to see. It is so disgusting that my friends will not go near the book! However, I am excited to try the various non-chemical controls the book readily provides. A holostic aproach seems to be the theme of the A-Z directory in the second half which gives me comfort in gardening... not just for me but the birds, bees and other GOOD critters in the garden. Happy hunting! (Slugs here in the N.W.)

The Chase Era: 1933 & 1942 Catalogs of the Chase Brass & Copper Co.
Published in Paperback by Schiffer Publishing, Ltd. (01 January, 2000)
Average review score:

Fantastic FinaleIn this concluding book in a series of four about the history and products of the Chase Copper and Brass Co., the authors present the first (1933) and last (1942) catalogs of Chase's consumer products...and a wonderful surprise. The catalog pictures are crisp and clear, and the contrast between the early and last product offerings can be easily compared. But the first publishing of a series of pre-1933 "flyers" that were Chase's first "catalog" make this a must-have reference for collectors. Nine new pieces are shown, and new, additional information is provided about several other items previously attributed to Chase. Definite 5 star kudos to the the authors, Don Johnson and Leslie Pena, for this wonderful resource.
The Final of Four on ChaseThis book is the final of four outstanding books by these two accomplished authors. Any Chase collector or deco enthusiast should have them in their reference library. This book features reprints of original 1933 and 1942 Chase catalogs, factory information, and pre-1933 reprints of Chase Specialty flyers, some of which have never been published before. Pictures of newly discovered Chase products will be a great help to Chase collectors in identification of their wares. This book is a must for all those who appreciate the fine craftsmanship that came from the Chase factories. Donald-Brian Johnson and Leslie Pina should be commended for putting together this four part Chase reference set, this book being the final one of the four. Highly recommend!

Back to the FutureThis was a great book I could not put it down. It made me think of what it would be like to go back to the Old West from the 21st Century.Trey and Amanda's reactions to their different worlds keeps the story moving right along.I like to read historical romances and this is one of the best.It makes me want to look for a white horse to show up in my yard. I would highly recommend this book it is a good light summer read, one that helps you to escape from the real world for a while. I give this book 5 stars.

Chase's Calendar of Events 2001 [with CD rom]
Published in Paperback by McGraw-Hill/Contemporary Books (11 September, 2000)
Average review score:

Event planning 101!Want to plan an event or a part for certain day but can not find a theme to match this ocassion. Well, verily if one uses/reads or consults this reference work in question, i.e., Chase's Calendar of Events 2001 [with CD rom] by Sandy Whiteley, then one will find the answers. Want to find out why Mexico's national holiday is on May 5th, then read this book and you will find out. Highly Recommended.
Excellent ResourceIn addition to being a great book for "broadcasters, event planners and advertisers" as noted in the publisher's review, Chases Calendar of Events is a great resource for anyone working in education (At any level)! Working in residence life, it is an excellent resource for programming, or simply for "random trivia" in newsletters or on bulletin boards. If you have a unique or original holiday, you can also have it included. (For example, 2 years ago, we started "International Residence Hall Student Staff Recognition Day," and it is now included in the annual publication and is being recognized worldwide).
I would highly recommend this book!
The format follows the same style as the others, an upfront essay (in this case Linda Chase writes about the use of photography by artists over the last century or so) followed by hundreds of illustrations from the featured artists, twenty-eight in this book. These artists are continuing to record 'the fascinating in the familiar' as Ms Chase succinctly puts it and this is one reason I love these paintings, they record Americana so wonderfully, though it is worth remembering that when these paintings, many of them huge, are reproduced a few inches wide it tightens up all the detail and they become even more 'photographic'. On page seventeen of the first volume twelve artists work was shown (unfortunately in black and white) the same size as the original painting and you can see how different their brushstrokes are.
Of the artists, some of my favorites are Davis Cone for his movie theaters (and if you like him too, have a look at a lovely book about movie theaters and his paintings, eighty shown in 'Popcorn Palaces') Robert Gniewek for street scenes at night, Charles Bell the pinball wizard, Linda Bacon for her toy tableau's including one called 'Crash' which has a three toy car pile-up and artfully uses Grant Wood's painting 'Death on the Ridge Road' as a backdrop. Perhaps the most amazing paintings in the book are Don Jacot's 'Retro-Active' (it took most of 1998 to paint) and 'Garbo's' (2001) both show shop-fronts with the windows crammed with nostalgia antiques. I sometimes think these artists do their best to make the painting as hard to do as possible!
So, a lovely book to enjoy over and over and thank you Mr Meisel for your faith in these artists and the Photorealist movement. I'm looking forward to the fourth volume around 2010.
